VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Claiming Meng Wanzhou’s arrest was politically motivated, Vancouver-Kingsway NDP MP Don Davies says our country should not extradite the Huawei executive to the U.S.
According to Davies, “it is very clear” that the CFO’s arrest was politically motivated, noting the U.S. intends to use Meng as a “bargaining chip.”
In a letter, Davies writes the U.S. want Meng to help with negotiations in the ongoing economic trade war.
“Canada must not let our nation be manipulated by Donald Trump, and we must stand firmly for the rule of law and our sovereignty,” he adds.
The MP claims that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was notified days in advance of the extradition request, which he says is a “clear signal” that politics was involved.
“The Extradition Act says we should refuse extradition when it is unjust or oppressive to do so, or when the underlying reason is the person’s nationality or conduct of a political character,” Davies adds. “Any or all of these reasons apply here.”
He finishes the letter by asking Canada’s Minister of Justice Jody Wilson-Raybould to “do the right thing” and refuse to surrender Meng. |
