Hillary Clinton wore this now $7,497 coat to give a speech on income inequality.

In an effort to upgrade the outdated pantsuit uniform, presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has had a complete wardrobe overhaul. But her efforts to update her look have backfired a bit this week with the revelation that one of her jackets costs more than most people make in a month.

The garment was worn during during her New York primary victory in April, where Clinton discussed topics like income inequality, retirement security and job creation...all while wearing a Giorgio Armani tweed jacket that retails for $12,495.

To be fair, Donald Trump doesn’t exactly wear the suits in his Donald J. Trump collection ($280 on Amazon) but rather, $7,000 Brioni pieces, not to mention the cost of shoes, ties, and shirt. And hairspray.

Regardless, Clinton’s single wardrobe choice created the predictable Twitter outrage, with a flood of sarcastic quips about how relatable the Democratic candidate is.

Hillary Clinton wore a jacket that costs more than my car while giving a speech on "inequality".

This is not a punchline, it’s a fact.

As New York Magazine points out, Clinton is hardly the first to take a hit for the cost of her personal appearance. Recent election cycles have included shock at John Edwards’s $400 haircut outrage at and Sarah Palin’s $150,000 shopping spree. And many have since come to Clinton’s defense, suggesting it is petty to criticize the candidate over her appearance.

Perhaps the outrage on both sides will die down a bit now that the garment has been discounted $5,000.
